Journey Back Home

Friday 23rd May 2025 Today we traveled home cross country from Brecon. Approx 165 miles. There's no easy West-East route to take especially if you want to avoid Motorways so it took a little while. On the way Gill managed to sniff out the the most expensive garden centre in all of Christendom - Burford Garden Company! We used the loo and then had our lunch in the van.

Walk up Pen Y Bryn

Image
Thursday 22nd May 2025 Today we walked from the campsite up to the top of Pen Y Bryn in the Brecon Beacons returning via Talybont-on-usk and the canal. It was a great walk - quite steep on the initial upward part through woods and onto the moorland close to the top. The path back down to Talybont was nicer - a bit more gentle and through nice woods and across streams. We stopped for a pint at the White Heart in Talybont before the 2 mile walk back to the campsite along the Brecon to Monmouth canal. A 10 mile walk in total. Video from top

Moving on to Brecon

Wednesday 21st May 2025 Today we moved on to our last site on this trip at Pencelli near Brecon.  The drive of 60 miles or so was lovely especially down the B4520 from Builth Wells to Brecon. We stopped in Brecon (Parking at Morrisons car park) and had a wonder around the town and also got some lunch from a great little cafe called Arabella's. After picking up some provisions we headed to the Campsite (Pencelli Castle). The Campsite was lovely if a bit pricey. Once we'd settled in we walked a couple of hundred yards to the nearest pub and had a drink in the garden which overlooks the Brecon to Monmouth canal.

The Weatherman’s Walk

Tuesday 20th May 2025 Following the Weatherman's circular walk from Devils Bridge... Weatherman's Walk We set off from the campsite, picked up a takeaway coffee from the Tea room attached to the site and set off - initially along the road past the Hafod hotel and further along past the Station for the Vale of Rheidol Railway. We then turned off from the road and followed the walk through fields, along farm tracks, through native woodland, and pine forests, down into gorges, across bridges (and unfortunately up the other side 🥴). At one point we had to cross the Vale of Rheidol Railway line and timed it right to see the train go by... Rheidol Railway After crossing the railway we dropped down to the Rheidol river. A little further along we spotted the train again in the distance on its way back to Aberystwyth... Gill soaking up the sunshine. Spotted these two characters who came over for a photo just before our well earned...

Devils Bridge & Waterfall

Image
Monday 19th May 2025 A very touristy morning - we visited the three bridges & waterfalls nature trail in Devils  a two minute walk from the campsite. £5 each to get in and walk around (or rather up and down) the gorge. There were plenty of steps and a couple of good views of the waterfall... The three bridges stacked on top of each other. We came across this Welsh lady on our journey. We were thinking of taking the small steam train to Aberystwyth and back (even though it was £35 a ticket!) - the Vale of Rheidol Railway. But, when it turned up, rather than being pulled by a steam engine it was being pulled by a diesel so in the end we decided against it. Great Little Trains of Wales We walked back to the van and had a coffee & some lunch then went for a walk up the hill opposite the campsite.
